- In my group was Sarah, Lara and I. We decided each role that we would take within the video, Sarah being the main role with me featured throughout and Lara filming the video. We also split things like the Storyboard, Prop List and shooting schedule equally which each of us doing one of these tasks. Once everything was filmed Lara and I edited everything together and tried to get the lip syncing as accurate as possible which proved to be a difficult task.
2) How did you plan your sequence? What processes did you use?
- To plan our sequence we studied the Taylor Swift video, the first minute of the You Belong with me video. We analysed the props that are used and made a list of the costumes and props that we would need etc. We then equally split the list and worked out who had what costume and prop wise and bought them into school. We also took the lyrics from the first minute and worked out shot went with what lyrics and how long that they would need to last.
3) What theories could you apply to the video you chose?
4) What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
- Goodwins theory can be applied to the video that we chose. He stated that each video illustrate using the video to explain the genre and the lyrics of the song. Our video is a typical girly song about romance so the video explains this and relates to the lyrics very well. 'She wears short skirts I wear t-shirts' and the video shows Taylor in casual clothes and the girl she is singing about in a short skirt and more dressed out. Goodwin also empathised how important star image is. In the video Taylor is dressed very 'cute' and causal which may appeal to many people as it gives her the likeability factor, it is more relateable for her younger fans as she is not dressed in skimpy outfits.
- The technology that we used for our Prelim task is a Camera, Tripod, Phone, Green Screen and Adobe Premiere Pro. We used the camera to film with and the Tripod to have the camera on as in the Taylor video the shots are static and as we were copying it this is what we wanted. We used the phone to play the music outloud so that when Sarah and I were lipsyncing we had something to go by, we then used the Green screen to film the shots of Dom on as they are in a boys bedroom and we did not have this layout, and also of Sarah as she was singing on a bed and we did not have a bed accessable. Finally we used adobe to edit everything.
5) What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
- Being an all girl group before we finally decided on Taylor Swift we had to make sure that we had a boy that we could rely on to play the role of the boy in the video. Once we had this confirmed we could stop worrying about this. We had to take into account that we only had the school as a facility to use for the backdrop so filming a video which is set in a bedroom is a hard task. By this we had to decorate the toilet to look more like a bedroom and make use of the green screen. Becuase some of the shots are of the star singing into a mirror we had too make sure that when Lara was filming she was not visible in the mirror. And finally when editing we had to make sure that the lip syncing some what fit as best as it could.
6) How successful was your music video copy? Please identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently? What did others say about your production?
- In general I feel that as a group we worked extremly well together the work was evenly spread and everyone played a role in the production of our prelim task. I feel that the green screen was actually very succsessful in making the backdrop look like a bedroom, especially as we had nothing to work with. What wasn't as succsessful was the filming in the mirror in the bathroom, this is because you could see the tiles in the background which clearly made it look like a bathroom. To improve this we should of taken the green screen into the bathroom and used this to make the background of the mirror look like a bedroom. The overall review of our video was it was good considering the setting that we had although the lip syncing was off in certian parts and the video looked amatuer because of the background in the bathroom.
7) What have you learnt from completing this task? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing your music video, do you think?
8) How does it compare with filming an opening to a film?
- When we shoot the actual music video we will have accsess to pretty much whatever setting that we want so I need to take this into consideration, this will immediatly make the video less ammetuer. What I have learnt from this is the most important thing is planning it is important to have the lyrics and cut them down and decide exactly how long each shot is going to last and what lyrics that they are going to go with to make sure the lip syncing is correct.
- What I have noticed from looking at music video is that music videos have a lot more cuts and the shots are very quick. This is to make it exciting and not boring for the audience.
9) What are your strengths and weaknesses as a group member?
- My strengths as a team member are that I am very commited, I am happy to put in extra work to make the final product to the best of my ability. I am also okay with being infront of the camera (although I am not always good at it.) I think that I am pretty good with editing which is a key strength within making a music video. My weaknesses are that I get frustrated easily if something is not perfect.
10) Looking at the other group's videos which do you think were most successful and why?
I feel that Charlie-Anns, Kierans and Emma's was the best video as they used the resources to their advantage, the video is set in a classroom so they could acsess this at school making it look more professional. They also had both boys and girls in their group so this was easy to get the cast members for the video.
